Slade's Bar and Grill has been serving drinks and mouthwatering soul food to the folks living in the South End and Lower Roxbury neighborhoods for over seven decades.
During that time dignitaries, sport stars, presidents and war heroes have been part of Slade's celebrated history.
1930 - Mr. Renner introduced the Barbecue to Boston by opening Slade's in the early. His great grandfather, Benjamin Slade started in North Carolina during the days of slavery. Barbecues at this time were held in secret places, usually swamps, where they were safe from bloodhounds and discovery.
Benjamin Slade was discovered celebrating his 41st birthday with his friends at a barbecue in a swamp. His discoverers were evidently captivated with the delicious feast, for he was later called on to cook for many gatherings, both social and political. From this experience he soon became renowned expert in the art of barbecuing. This art was passed down from father to son for many generations and now you can enjoy the same delicious recipes at Slade's Bar and Grill.
1940 - Dignitaries, celebrities, and a president wine and dine at Slade's Bar and Grill. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joe Louis are two of Slade's distinguished guests during the 1940's.
1941 - HMS Rodney sinks the Bismark - Where did the crew of teh HMS Rodney celebrate aftger they sunk the German destroyer, The Bismark, during WWII? They celebrated in many places including docking in Boston to party at Slade's Bar and Grill. Below is a picture of the menu that the sailors signed as well as a painting of the HMS Rodney at sea.
1950 - Slade's Bar and Grill, includes music along with its already famous lip-smacking cuisine.
1960 - Bill Russell, Celtic great, becomes part of Slade's history. Many people don't know that Bill Russell owned Slade's during the 1960's.
1970-1990 - Slade's continues to be a favorite local gathering place.
Today Slade's continues to be THEE location for hip local music and tantalizing soul food.
